National Conference 2020

National Conference 2020

How long Lord? Finding hope when the storm clouds gather

Sometimes we find ourselves struggling to understand this world. Things don’t seem to run smoothly. Bad people get away with doing bad things. Good people seem to suffer. It doesn’t seem fair. On top of all that it can feel like God isn’t doing anything and the world is spinning out of control. When we are confronted with these troubles we can be tempted to give up and despair. But there is a better way.

In the Bible, God has given us what we need to survive when we find ourselves faced with these harsh realities. He gives us prayers to pray and language to use. He shows us what we desperately need to know, and in particular he shows us more of himself. We learn to lament but not to despair. To cry but not to give up.

This year at the conference we will walking through the Book of Habakkuk and allowing God to teach us what faith looks like in the dark places of life. When we begin to see God in all his glory, it doesn’t answer all our questions, but it is the place where we can find joy.

Jonty Allcock is the pastor at The Globe Church, London. He is married to Linda and has three boys. He studied chemistry at university, supports Southampton FC, and loves teaching people about Jesus. He is the author of Impossible Commands

Patrick Dixon will give the Rendle Short Lecture. He is chairman of Global Change Ltd. He has advised over 400 of the world's largest corporations including many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical and medical technology companies on a wide range of global trends. He has been ranked as one of the 20 most influential business thinkers alive today. In 1988, as a palliative care physician at University College Hospital, he founded the international Christian AIDS agency ACET (AIDS Care, Education and Training), which has programmes in 14 nations. He is married to Sheila with four children and seven grandchildren.
