Scotland Weekend Conference 2017

Scotland Weekend Conference 2017

BROKEN MASTERPIECES

The three Bible talks will focus on Genesis chapters 1–3.  We will explore in a brief compass some of the practical themes arising from the central biblical doctrines in these chapters of creation, fall, and the consequences for human life. In particular, the aim is to probe some of the main spiritual and emotional needs people experience and how the gospel of God’s grace meets such needs. The hope is to help us in our fellowship with others.

Who is the conference for?
We welcome members of the medical and allied professions to the conference, in addition to CMF members and their families; you don’t need to be a member of CMF to attend. Day visitors are welcome, as are those who can only attend for part of the conference.

Children’s programme & crèche
There will be a full programme for school-age children during all main sessions, including Friday evening. There will be a crèche for pre-school children during the main sessions on Saturday and Sunday. We will have a core of two people looking after the children and will ask parents to help during one of the sessions. The children’s leaders very much appreciate assistance, and welcome volunteers. Please indicate on the booking form if you have clearance from Disclosure Scotland.

Organising Committee

The conference has been organised by the CMF Glasgow committee.

Seminars

1. Volunteering and beyond: global health and you
Stuart Fergusson is a trainee in General Surgery with educational, research and advocacy interests in global health. While based in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 2016-17, he wrote a policy report on the value of international volunteering to the Scottish NHS.
2. Compassion without compromise: maintaining faithfulness in a secular age
Peter Saunders is CMF Chief Executive. The seminar will explore the challenges of maintaining biblical doctrine and standards in a hostile world.
3. Family matters: infertility, pregnancy loss  and adoption
Audrey Chalmers is a Consultant Intensivist in Glasgow, and a CMF Associate Staff Worker. Ann Allen has a life long experience of pastoral ministry. Audrey and Anne are involved in a team which delivers support and resources for those struggling personally with infertility (www.hopedeferred.co.uk). The seminar will be suitable for those both struggling with the issue personally, and for those seeking to help patients.
4. On the edge of reason:  Christian care in dementia and disability
Graham Ellis is a Consultant Geriatrician and National Clinical Lead for Older People and Frailty. He was recently Associate Medical Director for Lanarkshire Health Board. The seminar will look at how we can provide meaningful pastoral care for those with dementia or other cognitive impairment. Graham has both professional and personal experience in this area.
5. Resilience founded in Christ
Richard Day is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Ninewells Hospital, and Regional Team Leader for the CMF Dundee group. He apparently has a low resilience score. The seminar will look at how our faith ensures we can be resilient, and the practical resources that can help to develop resilience personally, or help others towards greater resilience.
